Right outside of Valencia is a unique farming community, la Huerta Valenciana. Many fruits and vegetables are grown here, like tomatoes, onions, chufas (tiger nuts), melons and oranges. It's easy to grow fresh produce because conditions are ideal. The nutritious soil and the distinct climate between mountains and the Mediterranean Sea create a bountiful harvest.
Your English speaking guide accompanied by a local farmer will explain the history of their unique irrigation system and its challenges. While visiting a chufa farm you will make your own horchata (typical drink in Valencia). You will learn some insider secrets and the healthy side effects of this yummy chufa drink.
Have you ever heard of Lladró? The renowned fine porcelain factory is situated in the heart of La Huerta Valenciana. It was established in 1953 by three Lladró brothers: Juan, José and Vicente. They were a farming family. The brothers started producing vases and jugs in an oven in their backyard. This was the beginning of the famous Spanish brand. Lladró. You will visit their factory and witness porcelain gems come to live. Tours are spoken in English and Spanish. After the tour you have time to browse their gift shop and purchase a piece of art or two.
We recommend enjoying lunch in La Huerta Valenciana. Some of the farms have their own restaurants. The dishes will be prepared with fresh ingredients harvested from their fields. A true farm to table experience!
